Rhona Stainthorp

Rhona Stainthorp OBE is a British academic. She is an Emerita Professor at the Institute of Education, University of Reading. She specialises in reading development and challenges, with her research focusing on the role of phonics in literacy.[1]

In 2024, she was recognised with an Order of the British Empire in the King's Birthday Honours for her contributions to education.[2]

Stainthorp completed an undergraduate degree in politics at the University of Nottingham,[3] followed by a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London (now Birkbeck, University of London). She later obtained a master's degree in Human Communication from the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, and a PhD under the supervision of Professor Maggie Snowling.
