After graduating from Oxford, Shore joined the British Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant on probation with the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment in October 1967.[5] He was confirmed in the rank coming in March 1968,[6] with promotion to lieutenant following in February 1970.[7] In December of the same year, he was promoted to captain.[8] He was promoted to major in December 1974,[9] before being promoted to lieutenant colonel in June 1982.[10] Shore retired from active service in September 1993, at which point he was appointed to the Reserve of Officers.[11]
