Rishi Madlani (born 28 February 1982) is a British banker and Labour member who is UK Head of Sustainability for Investec, Head of Sustainable Finance and Just Transition at NatWest Group[1] and a Councillor for Bloomsbury in the London Borough of Camden.[2][3] He is a close ally of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, serving as a Councillor within his parliamentary constituency.[4][5][6][7]

From a Hindu African Asian background, his mother was forced to leave Uganda in the 1970s.[8]

Madlani is an alumnus of the London School of Economics, where he was General Secretary of the Student Union.[9]

Banking career

Madlani is UK Head of Sustainability for Investec, which encompasses Investec’s approach to climate and sustainable finance, driving delivery on their Net Zero commitments and overseeing their CSR activities.

He is Head of Sustainable Finance and Just Transition at NatWest Group, having worked for the bank for over 15 years across the London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt offices. He leads on Climate and Sustainable Finance, encompassing supporting the transition to a low carbon economy and funding for areas with a social purpose. Madlani is Global Chair of the LGBT+ staff group.

Political career

Madlani is a Councillor for Bloomsbury in the London Borough of Camden, where he chairs the Pensions Committee. The fund is a Local Government Pension Scheme and won a LAPF Award for its innovative approach to ESG. He is also Shareholder Chair of the London Collective Investment Vehicle (LCIV), representing c. £50bn of London’s Local Government Pensions. He is also the borough LGBT+ champion.

He stood for selection as the Labour Party candidate for Leicester East in the 2024 UK general election but he was beaten by Deputy Mayor of London Rajesh Agrawal.[10][11][12]

Other Work

Madlani is elected to the board of the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association[13] and also serves on the boards of UKSIF, RenewableUK, UK100, the network of local government leaders supporting climate leadership and action and Opening Doors London. He is also part of the LSE Grantham Just Transition Investor Alliance.

He is an Emeritus Governor at the London School of Economics and a Council Member at University of Leicester[14] and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.[15]

Madlani helped establish Foxes Pride, the LGBT+ supporters association for Leicester City Football Club and is the Co-Chair of Pride in Football, the umbrella group of LGBT+ fan groups which seeks to improve LGBT+ experiences around Football.

Awards

Madlani won the Inspirational Leader Award at the 2022 British LGBT Awards.[16]
