'Rostam Azizi Rostam Azizi (born 21 August 1964) is a Tanzanian businessman and investor. He is the Chairman of Taifa Group of Companies and Honora Plc (YAS Tanzania and Mixx by YAS), and also serves as Chairman of Williamson Diamonds Limited (WDL). Through a range of investments across East and Southern Africa, he has been involved in the development of businesses in telecommunications, energy, mining, logistics, media and infrastructure.

In 2013, Forbes described him as Tanzania’s first dollar billionaire. His business interests reflect the growing role of private sector investment in driving economic development and strengthening regional connectivity across East and Southern Africa.
Rostam served as Member of Parliament for Igunga Constituency in Tabora Region from 1994 to July 2011, representing the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
Early Life and Education
Rostam Azizi was born at Ndala Mission Hospital in Nzega, Tabora Region, Tanzania, and grew up in Igunga, where he completed his early schooling. He later moved to Dar es Salaam and subsequently to the United Kingdom for further education, where he studied economics at Exeter.
He began his career in the family business before branching out independently to build a diversified portfolio of businesses across several sectors. Over time, his business interests expanded from trading into sectors such as telecommunications, energy, mining, logistics and media.
His early life in Igunga would later influence many of the development initiatives he supported during his tenure as Member of Parliament for the constituency.
Business and Investments
Rostam Azizi is involved in several business ventures across East and Southern Africa. He currently serves as Chairman of Taifa Group of Companies, Chairman of Honora Plc (YAS Tanzania and Mixx by YAS), and Chairman of Williamson Diamonds Limited (WDL).
His investments span several sectors including telecommunications, energy, mining, agriculture, aviation, transport and logistics, media, real estate and infrastructure. Many of these businesses operate across East and Southern Africa and international markets.
Rostam previously founded Vodacom Tanzania and later exited the company in stages between 2014 and 2019. In March 2026, Nation Media Group announced that Rostam had acquired a majority shareholding in the company through a strategic investment.

Public Service
During his tenure as Member of Parliament for Igunga, the constituency experienced significant expansion of social infrastructure. This included the construction of dispensaries in every village, expanded access to clean water, and electrification across wards in the constituency, initiatives that later informed similar developments across the country.
He also pioneered a community health insurance initiative in Igunga through the Community Health Fund, which expanded access to healthcare services for households in the constituency.
Former Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mkapa later credited Rostam as a pioneer of the health insurance scheme that would become known as the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), as noted in his memoir 'My Life, My Purpose.'
Community Initiatives
Through Taifa Group, Azizi has supported various community initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting social development across Tanzania.
