The Scholars Pavilion is a monument at the United Nations Office at Vienna, Austria. The pavilion was donated by the nation of Iran to the United Nations in 9 June 2009, and is located in the central Memorial Plaza of the Vienna International Centre. Designed in the form of a traditional Persian chahartaq, the pavilion incorporates elements of Iranian architecture. It features statues of four prominent Muslim Persian scholars: Avicenna, Al-Biruni, Al-Razi, and Omar Khayyam.[1][2]

Architecture and details

The Pavilion was designed by Alireza Nazem Alroaya and constructed by Sadeh Architecture City Construction. The monument is built with Achaemenid architecture,[3] with Persian columns and other features from Persepolis and other remains from the Achaemenid Empire. The Chahartaq pavilion form runs through Iranian architecture from pre-Islamic times to the present. Each statue was designed to represent distinctive aspects of the scholar's scientific achievements. The name of each scholar and the dates of his life are inscribed in Persian and English beneath the corresponding statue. Al-Biruni, a renowned astronomer, is depicted holding a globe. Omar Khayyam, a prominent philosopher, astronomer, mathematician, and poet, is depicted holding paper and a pen. Rhazes, a renowned chemist and physician credited with the discovery of alcohol, is depicted holding a flask and a scroll. While Avicenna, a renowned physician and scholar, is depicted holding a book.
