Sh 2-228 has an asymmetrical shape and is located near the large Auriga OB1 association. It is a region of star formation. Sh 2-228 contains or is associated with the infrared star cluster [IBP2002] CC 01[5] (also known as CC 01), a young open cluster with an estimated mass of about 1800 M☉.[2] The cluster consists of several bright blue stars and a population of fainter stars, with an age of approximately 1–2 million years. Surrounding field stars in the region are older, estimated at 5–6 million years.[2] In the Avedisova Catalogue, the nebula is also associated with some radio wave sources.[6]
Studies based on radio wave emissions have provided for Sh 2-228 a significantly greater distance, around 7,900 parsecs (over 25,000 light-years).[7]
