The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 called it a general aviation facility.[4]
In 2011 the airport opened a new terminal building. The 4,000 ft2 (370 m2) building has a conference room and observation deck. The previous terminal was built in 1953.[5]
Central Airlines scheduled flights to Shawnee from 1950 to 1954.[6]
