The Siders case is an ongoing criminal investigation in Vinton County, Ohio, involving alleged prolonged child neglect and abuse after 16 children, aged 20 months to 18 years, were removed from a home in Hamden, Ohio, on June 30, 2026. Four adults, Gary Siders II, Elizabeth Siders, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, were charged with 16 counts each of endangering children.[1]

The attorney general’s office characterized the case as involving "prolonged and extreme interfamilial neglect and abuse".[1] Investigators also emphasized that the case was not believed to involve human trafficking.[2]
Background
Gary Siders II and Elizabeth Siders married in Mason County, West Virginia, in 2008, when Elizabeth Siders was 15 and Gary Siders II was 18. At the time, West Virginia allowed marriages at any age with parental consent.[3]
Officials reported that the Siders family had lived in various counties in Ohio since 2008 and that investigators believed the family had mostly failed to create medical and governmental records during that time. On November 20, 2022, Elizabeth Siders gave birth to conjoined twins who died the same day of natural causes.[4]
Investigation and arrests
The children were discovered during search warrants at a residence in Hamden on June 30, 2026. The warrants were connected to a separate investigation related to indecent exposure incidents perpetrated by Gary Siders II. According to authorities, Siders exposed himself to members of the public on four separate occasions on May 23, May 27, May 29, and finally on May 31. Upon executing the search warrant, the children were found in a 12 foot by 12 foot room. Investigators stated they did not expect to find any children in the home whatsoever. The home was in an extreme state of disrepair, with reports stating first responders almost fell through the floor as it was so severely rotted by filth.[5] It was initially unknown if any of the Siders was the biological parents of the children, but an attorney for Elizabeth Siders confirmed she is the mother of all 16 children, meaning she was giving birth on a nearly annual basis over the course of 18 years.[6][7]
The Ohio Attorney General's Office announced that the 16 children inside the residence during the search were in a severe state of neglect including being covered in insects and feces and were all in a 12 foot by 12 foot room. Officials said the children were taken out of the home and immediately transported to local hospitals. Some of them received care and were later released, while others were taken for more advanced medical treatment and remained hospitalized in serious condition. One child was allegedly intubated. Neighbors and officials said they were unaware that any children were living in the home, and school records did not indicate any children belonging to the Siders were enrolled in any area schools.[8]
Legal proceedings
On July 7, 2026, attorneys for the Siders waived preliminary hearings. Gary Siders Sr.'s attorney filed a motion seeking to reduce his client’s $300,000 bond, citing health issues and raised concerns about his competency to stand trial. The judge granted a bond modification for Gary Siders Sr., with GPS monitoring required if he were to be released from the hospital.[9]
The children were placed in the custody of the Ohio Department of Child and Family Services after being removed from the residence. WOUB reported that the children were taken to medical facilities around Ohio and remained in the custody of children’s services.[9]
