Siya Khumalo

Siya Khumalo is a South African writer. He is the author of You Have To Be Gay To Know God (2018) and The Queer Book of Revelation (2024).[1]

Early life

Khumalo was born and raised in Umlazi, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.[2] After high school, he served in the military.[3]

Books

You Have To Be Gay To Know God was published by Kwela Books in 2018.[4] The foreword was written by Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron.[3] The book was banned in Zambia.[5]

The Queer Book of Revelation was published in 2024.[6]

Pageantry

In 2015, Khumalo was the runner-up in Mr Gay South Africa. He represented Zambia in the Mr Gay World competition the same year, finishing in the top ten.[7][8] He represented Zambia due to his part-Zambian heritage.[9][8] His participation drew public criticism in Zambia.[5]

Khumalo writes for the Daily Maverick, News24, MambaOnline, BizNews, and the Rand Daily Mail.[7]

Awards and recognition

You Have To Be Gay To Know God won the Desmond Tutu-Gerrit Brand Prize in 2020. It was long-listed for the Sunday Times CNA Literary Awards and shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg Prize.[1][9]

Khumalo was a Mandela Washington Fellow in 2022 as part of the Young African Leaders Initiative.[1]

Personal life

Khumalo is gay and a practicing Christian.[3][8]
