Soperton is a city in Treutlen County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,889 in 2020. The city is the county seat of Treutlen County.[4]

History

A post office was established at Soperton in 1902.[5] The city was named after Benjamin Franklin Soper, a railroad official.[6]

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Soperton as a town in 1902.[7]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.5 km2), of which 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.61%) is water.

2020 census

As of the 2020 census, Soperton had a population of 2,889. The median age was 38.1 years. 23.6% of residents were under the age of 18 and 17.1% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 105.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 101.7 males age 18 and over.[21][22]

0.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 100.0% lived in rural areas.[23]

There were 1,038 households in Soperton, of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 29.6% were married-couple households, 19.1% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 45.6% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[21]

There were 1,184 housing units, of which 12.3% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.7% and the rental vacancy rate was 7.5%.[21]

Education

Treutlen County School District

The Treutlen County School District holds pre-school to grade twelve, and consists of one elementary school and a middle/high school.[25] The district has 74 full-time teachers and over 1,234 students.[26]
