Sphegina crassispina is a species of hoverfly in the family Syrphidae found in Kambaiti Pass, Myanmar, a montane forest with swampy areas and streams located 2000 meters above sea level.[1] A specimen was found in China that fits the description of S. crassispina save for the more extensively shiny frons and the slightly more protruding frontal prominence.[2]
The name comes from the Latin words 'crassus', meaning 'big', and 'spina', meaning 'thorn', referring to the strong spine-like setae on the male sternite IV.[1]
