Stay Foolish (Japanese: ステイフーリッシュ, Hepburn: Sutei Fūrisshu; 22 February 2015) is a retired Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. He competed from 2017 to 2022, recording four wins in thirty-four starts, including the Kyoto Shimbun Hai (GII) in 2018, the Red Sea Turf Handicap (G3) and Dubai Gold Cup (G2) in 2022.[1] His racing name is derived from Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford University commencement speech, "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish."[2]

Background

Stay Foolish is a bay horse bred in Chitose, Hokkaido, by Shadai Farm.[1] He was sired by Stay Gold, a son of Sunday Silence, and his dam was Kauai Lane, a daughter of King Kamehameha.[3] His dam Kauai Lane won five races during her racing career, including the Turquoise Stakes (Open).[4] His dam's half-brother is Black Hawk, winner of the Yasuda Kinen and Sprinters Stakes.[4] He was owned by Shadai Race Horse and sent into training with Yoshito Yahagi at the JRA's Ritto Training Center.[1]

Racing career

2017: Two-year-old season

Stay Foolish debuted on December 10, 2017, in a maiden race on the turf at Chukyo Racecourse, winning by 0.4 seconds.[5] He finished third in the Hopeful Stakes (GI) at Nakayama Racecourse on December 28.[5]

2018: Three-year-old season

Stay Foolish finished tenth in the Kyodo Tsushin Hai (GIII) at Tokyo Racecourse in February.[5] On May 5, he won the Kyoto Shimbun Hai (GII) at Kyoto Racecourse, ridden by Yusuke Fujioka, defeating Admire Alba by 0.3 seconds.[5] He finished tenth in the Tōkyō Yūshun (Japanese Derby, GI) in May, fifth in the Kobe Shimbun Hai (GII) in September, and eleventh in the Kikuka Shō (GI) in October.[5] He finished third in the Challenge Cup (GIII) at Hanshin Racecourse in December.[5]

2019: Four-year-old season

Stay Foolish ran in eight races in 2019 without a win. He finished second in the Nakayama Kimpai (GIII), Kyoto Kinen (GII), and Fukushima Kinen (GIII), and third in the Naruo Kinen (GIII) and Hakodate Kinen (GIII).[5]

2020: Five-year-old season

Stay Foolish ran in six races in 2020 without a win. He finished second in the American Jockey Club Cup (GII) and third in the Kyoto Kinen (GII), Meguro Kinen (GII), and All Comers (GII).[5]

2021: Six-year-old season

Stay Foolish finished second in the Kyoto Kinen (GII) in February.[5] He was pulled up in the Sapporo Kinen (GII) in August after developing atrial fibrillation.[6] He finished fifth in the Hong Kong Vase (G1) at Sha Tin Racecourse in December.[5]

2022: Seven-year-old season and retirement

On February 26, Stay Foolish contested the Red Sea Turf Handicap (G3) over 3000 meters at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Saudi Arabia. Ridden by Christophe Lemaire, he took the lead from the start and won by 4.25 lengths over Sonnyboyliston, recording his first victory in three years and nine months.[7] On March 26, he won the Dubai Gold Cup (G2) over 3200 meters at Meydan Racecourse, defeating the previously unbeaten Manobo.[8]

Returning to Japan, he finished ninth in the Takarazuka Kinen (GI) in June.[5] He finished second in the Grand Prix de Deauville (G2) at Deauville-La Touques Racecourse in August.[5] He finished fourteenth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) at Longchamp Racecourse in October.[5]

On October 27, 2022, he was diagnosed with left foreleg suspensory ligamentitis. His retirement was announced the same day.[9] He was deregistered from JRA competition on October 28, 2022.[10]
