Sue-Anne Hilbre Biggs CBE was the Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society, retiring in June 2022 as the longest-serving Director General in the charity's history.[1] Biggs began her career in the travel industry, where she worked for 30 years,[2] and was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards.[3] She was made a CBE in the 2017 New Year Honours, for her services to the environment at ornamental horticulture industries.[4]

Biggs was born in Leicester and brought up in Sheffield.[5] She grew up on Caxton Road, in the Broomhill area of the city.[6] For her seventh birthday, her mother gave her a packet of seeds and a small trowel, encouraging her to plant them in their garden, and Biggs credits this as the source of her love of gardening.[7]

She attended Abbeydale Grammar School. She obtained a BA in English and American Literature from the University of Nottingham and a Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism from the University of Manchester.[5][8]

Kuoni Travel and Thomas Cook

Biggs began working for Kuoni Travel in 1982 as a product executive;[8] she was the first woman to be appointed to the board,[9][10] as well as the first non-Swiss board member.[2] For 12 years she was the managing director of the UK Division.[10] Biggs' role included working with the charities supported by Kuoni which included Plan International and the Born Free Foundation.[8] She left Kuoni after the organisation underwent a restructure,[11] having worked there for 25 years.[12]

Biggs joined Thomas Cook in 2008,[5][13] where she worked as managing director of scheduled business.[11] In 2008, Biggs was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards.[3] Biggs left Thomas Cook in August 2009.[13]
