Syed Aamer Raza

Syed Aamer Raza HI(M) SBt is a four-star army officer in the Pakistan Army, currently serving as the Commander of the National Strategic Command at the National Command Authority. He was appointed to this position on 24 July 2026 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.[1][2] Previously, Raza served as the 41st Chief of General Staff, Commander IV Corps and Chairman Heavy Industries Taxila.

Early life and education

Syed Aamer Raza was born in Kohat, North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) into a Pashtun-Syed family.

He studied from Command & Staff College Quetta and National Defence University Islamabad. He also holds a Master's in International Relations from the University of Nottingham (UK), along with MSc degrees in Arts & Science of Warfare and Defence & Strategic Studies.

Military career

Raza was commissioned in the 6th Lancers in 1988. He is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Quetta and National Defence University, Islamabad. He holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, MSc in Arts and Science of Warfare and Defence and Strategic Studies; both from National Defence University.[citation needed]

He has commanded the 6th Lancers from November 2007 to September 2009. He has also commanded an armored brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan and an Infantry Division. He has served as the Chief of Staff at ll Corps, and as Director General of the Weapons and equipment directorate.[citation needed]

He has been an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanized Warfare, Director Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies and Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College Quetta.[3]

Raza took over the command of Heavy Industries Taxila on 28 April 2020. On 11 October 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.[4]

On 16 May 2023, Raza was appointed as the Commander of the IV Corps, Lahore, following the 9 May riots in Pakistan.[5]

On 24 January 2025, Raza was appointed as Chief of the General Staff replacing Lt.Gen Avais Dastgir who was appointed as Commander V Corps, Karachi

On 24 July 2026, Prime Minister of Pakistan promoted him on rank of four stars general and appointed him first commander of National Strategic Command.[6]
