"Early history"

I do not rule out that there might have been native American influences on basketball (e.g. from lacrosse, which Naismith took as a starting point). However, the claim currently made in the article about an indigenous game played in Florida is dubious as that game's target was neither a basket nor a hoop, and it had no element of adversarial play, and there is no suggestion of how Naismith might know about a game played 300 years before him.
