Missed the point. Article is very poor.
What about wool? It is a fibre and a crop. In Australia, New Zealand or the UK (where wool is the only major fibre crop) if you talk about the fibre crop, there is no doubt that wool is the subject of the conversation
I suggest that the text about the fringe fibres can be lost, and some detail about the worlds important fibre crops be added. We could start by defining the word "crop" in context.
