The table says that in Australian football players use "helmet, knee braces, shoulder pads, back supports, arm guards". This is simply wrong. Players use none of those things. HiLo48 (talk) 02:09, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Several football-related articles make regular use of the term "codes" to describe the varieties/types/flavors/variants of the game. This terminology feels weird and opaque. Why not use words like "varieties", "types", "flavors", etc? I edited a few "codes" occurrences out of the Association Football article before I realized that the usage is pervasive and I wonder if I'm breaking an existing consensus. It's only "weird and opaque" if you reside in a football monoculture, elsewhere it's normal terminology. There's no basis or need to do anything.

"Codes" is a perfectly good word to describe the various types/flavors/variants of the game. It's very commonly used here in Australia, where have have four different forms of football played professionally, and several more played at an amateur level. It's not weird or opaque at all. Maybe it's an Aussie thing? Having spent time there, I can see your point, most countries have one dominant form of football. I had *never* heard nor read "code" until I looked at that article. I'm generally sports-y and a bit football-focused while the WC is on, a subscriber to The Athletic, totally not in that kind of monoculture. NFL is my favorite footy. I read sports coverage from US, Canadian, and British sources. Since I suspect there are a lot of people like me, if we really want to retain this terminology, it would be helpful if the first instance of the term "code" or "codes" was wiki-linked to something explaining what is meant. I can see your point. It seems that we might be facing an English language difference between our two countries. The article Football in Australia uses the word "code" or "codes" 94 times! I have looked at various articles about football in the USA, and cannot find the word there at all. Logically, the word comes from the concept of codification, "the act or process of arranging laws or rules into a systematic code or structure." Presumably that happens for most sports. Football in Australia doesn't define or Wikilink the word, presumably because it's so well known in Australia. I'm not sure what we could link it to. HiLo48 (talk) 01:12, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

hay figured weighing in here might be beneficial to both sides of this argument. First off if you all simply do a Google search of the term "football codes" you'd find this term is not only very old and original but still pretty widely used. This topic generally isn't discussed very often (not many people seem to care about the various different kinds of football just more whichever one they happen to like watching) but when the topic is brought up from my diving it seems the term comes up fairly often it's even on the FIFA museum website. I can also attest to having heard this phrase before in Ireland plenty of times (although I currently reside in the United States and have for several years, never know how fast a term can die off). I think generally the adverage person reads the article and immediately understands that "codes" is just a term for different variations/rule sets of football and it doesn't require anything extra added to it.
