ITnet is being scrapped, HEAnet are taking over the task of connecting the rest of the ITs. This was proposed as the result of a report commissioned by the Higher Education Authority (HEA): http://www.hea.ie/uploads/pdf/FutureResearchEducation.pdf

The most recent update on this project was at the HEAnet conference in November 2005, see slides 4-12: http://www.heanet.ie/conferences/2005/presentations/thursday%20Marina/JB_Update.ppt

HEAnet also connect over 3000 schools as part of the Schools Broadband Program: Background link: http://www.heanet.ie/services/services.php?serID=0&subID=34 Background link: http://www.education.ie/home/home.jsp?pcategory=17216&ecategory=22434&language=EN 3000 schools mentioned here (as of May 6th): http://www.heanet.ie/newsletter/

It may be worth mentioning ftp.heanet.ie, a very popular mirror service - http://ftp.heanet.ie/about/

The live network map is worth linking to: http://www.hea.net/

The links to the networks in the USA have been discontinued in favour of using the GEANT and Global Crossing (General Internet) links (see network map above). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.71.108.24 (talk) 7 May 2006‎
