Questions of importance

  • Hoe many prisoners does Israel have?
  • How many of these may be called 'political'?
  • Why is not Saharonim Penitentiary, Negev Desert, Ramat listed. Is it called something else? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.217.224.157 (talk) 16:17, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

  1. I don't have statistics, but the IPS employs 7791 people. That could give some idea as to how many prisoners it has.
  2. Depends on what you define as political, but it isn't likely that statistics about something like this exist. I am fairly sure anyhow that not that many prisoners were arrested merely for a political activity, and those are mostly extreme-right Jews from the settler movement. Others who might be called 'political prisoners' were arrested for violence, rioting, etc. and this includes many Arabs and left-wingers. Finally, I am not taking into account Palestinian prisoners because the laws that apply in their case are a bit different and since they're (usually) citizens of the PA, they don't count as political prisoners. I believe the total amount is up to 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in IPS prisons, not including detention centers. —Ynhockey (Talk) 16:02, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Starving prisoners

This should be mentioned:

“In a highly rare exercise of wartime legal restraint, Israel's Supreme Court ruled Sunday that the Israeli government has deprived Palestinian detainees of even a minimum subsistence diet and ordered authorities to increase the amount and improve the quality of food served to deprived Palestinian inmates.”

NPOV

The article says: “Conditions in Israeli prisons generally meet international standards.” Considering hundres of media articles and reports by human rights organisations about torture, ill-treatment and intentional starving of prisoners in Israel’s gaols, this simply does not make sense.
