It seems this new model demolished some old records.

Car and Driver are usually meticulous in their testing articles but they gave no details about how they tested the top speed. From your link https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a68005437/yangwang-u9-xtreme-top-speed-record/ I followed another link https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g64366646/the-quickest-cars-weve-tested-in-2025-so-far/ and from there followed another link to https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a32018270/how-we-test-cars/ . All good stuff but they didn't say if they did 2 opposing runs (to cancel out effects of ground slope or wind) or whether an official observer was present.

Note that the Car and Driver run was different to the run in China that was mentioned in the exclusion list.  Stepho  talk  23:59, 28 September 2025 (UTC)

The 1979 Aston Martin bulldog could possibly have been the first 200mph road car. Although built in 1979 it wasn't tested until 2023 when it achieved 205mph ~2026-11188-83 (talk) 14:10, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

At a minimum, it needs supporting references. What top speed did reviews say when it was new? Did the 2023 test use modern petrol, modern tyres, modern oil, modern piston rings, etc? Personally, I'd go with the top speed known when it was used.  Stepho  talk  23:10, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

I looked at the list and they're allmost all Super cars. Not one car that I could have gone down the street brought back in the day. I think the minimum production should have been set at 10000 units or more. ~2026-15316-49 (talk) 06:49, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

Records are about finding the extreme, not the mediocre. I'm not interested in the world's fastest production Corolla.  Stepho  talk  09:28, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

@Greglocock: I'll respond with a question: why are we including the Benz Velo?

• If we want a list of just strict time trials, I'm not aware of any surviving Velo being raced up to it's top speed under an independent two-way road test. (Correct me if I'm wrong, and if so, we should cite that source!)
• It also does not exceed 124mph for it's claimed speed, (which seems to be a speed selected because it's about the speed Autoweek's test of the XK120 managed to exceed).
• And it's obviously not post-1945.

So presumably we are including it to show the history and development of faster and faster automobiles...and yet, we then choose to omit all automobiles until 1945.

So the inclusion of the Velo is just kind of, arbitrary and doesn't contribute anything to this list as it stands realistically.

I'll make two suggestions: (1) Remove the Velo, or, (2) Remove the no-pre-1945 & under 124mph requirement.

I think we have maybe slept on a suggestion made by @NealeFamily: "maybe with a split table". You can reconcile the fact that we cannot hold early cars to a quite as strict standard as later ones with regards to speed claims then, and then it'd let the Velo sit in with other cars from it's era to show the development of cars in the early days.

I suggest you read the archives. I agree the Velo doesn't really fit the criteria, perhaps we need a note to that effect. The problem is that until comparatively recently establishing the top speed was often done in dubious circumstances and frequently with modified cars - a problem we still face occasionally. I would favour a split table set up and including pre-1945 cars in their own table personally (and I'd suggest we look at the page Longevity claims as a plausible starting point which could be followed), however if not that then I suggest we remove the Velo entirely as there's no real point for including it then. ~2026-41111-87 (talk) 22:07, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
