Apart from me, nobody else from my family ever left our village.

Overall:
Article is new enough, long enough. Appears neutral, with no copyvio issues detected by the tool or my spotcheck. As someone who regularly travelled Yogyakarta–Surakarta, I have qualms with the hook, however. I think it is very important to note that this is a self-description; being born in 1945, he would have reached the age of majority before TVRI broadcast American films (or, for that matter, before TVRI broadcast much). Given that cinemas were concentrated in the cities, he would have had to have viewed American films in Surakarta, likely with a chaperone. Between that and the fact that the Yogya-Klaten-Surakarta route is heavily developed, I'm not sure this hook fact remains true even if it was at the time it was mentioned. He could have been from the other side of the Bengawan Solo, where there would have been less development, but still... that region has also seen rapid development. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 00:54, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Chris Woodrich: Appreciate your concerns regarding this matter. Actually I too have some personal reservations, as there's also some disreparancies between the chronology of his life in the news article and his UN CV. In that case I'm proposing several alternative hooks that might be to your liking:
- ALT1: ... that the first thing Makmur Widodo did upon arriving in Ohio was to purchase a pair of jeans, a red shirt, and a cowboy hat? Source: same source,
After his arrival in Ohio, the first thing he did was to buy a pair of jeans, a red shirt and a cowboy hat.
- ALT2: ... that former ambassador Makmur Widodo used to work as a tour guide before entering diplomacy? Source: same source,
Later, I worked as a guide and translator for tourists in Yogyakarta to learn more about it all
- Thank you so much! Regards, Jeromi Mikhael 04:27, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you. ALT1 and ALT2 should be good to go! (Funny that the cowboy hat remains popular among permanent representatives to the UN; I have a picture of Soedjarwo with one). — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:57, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
