I love mantis shrimps so I'll be delighted to review this one. I'm aiming to finish the review within the next week. I always add comments incrementally. You're welcome to address them as they pop up. I note that you're new to Wikipedia and this is your first GA review so please do let me know if anything is unclear or you are unsure how to do something. @Cheetah131 I've made my initial comments. I'll probably have more to add later, but lets just focus on these for now. Please do ping me whenever you're done or need assistance :) AxonsArachnida (talk) 22:46, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Taxobox

  • For your synonyms, I suggest making "Hansen, 1895" small text (it makes it look neater).
  • For the binomial author name, I would add Hans Jacob Hansen as a link

Images

  • For the "'Neogonodactylus Oerstedii' Larvae" image, I think you should mention in the caption which ones are Neogonodactylus oerstedii. Also larvae doesn't need to be capitalised and 'Neogonodactylus Oerstedii' should be just Neogonodactylus oerstedii.
  • Images should have alt text. This is hidden text (different from a caption) that explains to visually impaired readers what the image looks like. I.e. for the first image it would be something like "A mantis shrimp on the sea floor. It is covered in white and reddish markings".

Taxonomy

  • "N. oerstedii was first reported by Hans Jacob Hansen in 1895" I suggest changing this to "N. oerstedii was first described by Hans Jacob Hansen in 1895".
  • One other thing you could mention is that the lectotype is stored at the Universitets København, Zoologisk Museum under registration CRU 2372 (https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=specdetails&id=38009&tid=408949).

Visual Systems

  • N. oerstedii has some of the most complex eyes in the Animal Kingdom. Isn't this true of all mantis shrimps? I'd omit this.
  • Studies suggest that UV light detection plays roles in vertical migration, feeding efficiencies, and protection from photodamage The paper you cite just says that its used for these things in pelagic animals. It doesn't really conclude whether this is the case in this species.
  • In addition, N. oerstedii have extremely complex opsin gene expression It would be good to explain why opsin gene expression is important

Behaviour

  • I don't think the meral spot subsection belongs in behaviour. I'd make a new section called "Physiology" and place it in there.
  • It's unclear from the article was the meral spot actually is.
  • "This complex's formation relies on..." maybe try "The formation of this complex relies on..."
  • "Additionally, oerstedii with darker meral spots also strike more times in a physical confrontation compared to oerstedii with lighter spots." you said "oerstedii" instead of "N. oerstedii" a few times. You should check the rest of the article and see if you've accidentally done this elsewhere.

Reproduction

  • Members of the N. genus come together only to mate while others mate for life. this sentence reads very weird.
  • Males produce sperm ducts rather than spermatophores (a protein capsule containing sperm) I'm unable to open sealifebase to confirm this, but it seems incorrect to say they "produce sperm ducts". Is it possible you mean "reproduce via sperm ducts"? Also you've linked sperm ducts to the human/vertebrate sperm ducts page. It'd be best to unlink it.

Claw protection

    • I'd put this into a Physiology section and rename it as "claw anatomy"

References

  • You seem to have accidentally duplicated " "Neogonodactylus oerstedii". sealifebase.ca. Retrieved 2026-04-09"
  • In reference titles, its good to italicise species/genus names. It makes it easier to look through.
  • You've also duplicated " "Stomatopod Grooming Behavior: Functional Morphology and Amputation Experiments in Gonodactylus Oerstedii"
  • "Porter, M. L.; Awata, H.; Bok, M. J.; Cronin, T. W. (2020). "PNAS". Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. 117 (16): 8948–8957" Why is PNAS the title? It should be "Exceptional diversity of opsin expression patterns in Neogonodactylus oerstedii (Stomatopoda) retinas"

Miscellaneous

  • Copyvio doesn't detect any plagiarism.
