World Cup bye

Is there a reference for the bye off the final ball of the UAE World Cup match bit. Found the incident on on Youtube and it looks like it should have been a bye but the ball does just bounce before the keeper takes it so it wouldn't have been out if the umpired believed hit it. Just watched the video (who knew YT had footage of that match from all the way back in 1996). Nowhere near it. So just a run, as the umpire doesn't call a bye, with no catching opportunity as he was miles away from it. AA (talk) 00:10, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

  • Good. I checked against CA, and everything matches.

Lead

  • The lead is concise, and summarises everything in the narrative.

Early life

  • I think a paragraph break would be better before "He came to England".

County cricket

  • I suggest a paragraph break before "The month after" as the topic shifts from domestic to international.
  • He would play three first-class and one-day matches in 1987 is slightly ambiguous. If it is three in total, might be best to say two and one, or one and two.
  • In the second paragraph, I think there should be a break before "His best season". He was outstanding in 1989, so I would keep that season separate from the 1988 and 1990 coverage. He must have been a possible for the Wisden 5CY in their 1990 edition. If Wisden had thought ahead, including Bakker would have given Dutch cricket a huge boost. Looking at the five who were chosen, I'd say only Mark Taylor and Dean Jones were certainties.
  • I'd have another paragraph break before "After suffering from a serious neck injury". That marks the end of his Hampshire career.
  • With all due respect to Nip Bakker, I bet his opponents preferred to face him rather than Malcolm!

World Cup appearance

  • Not sure about the Netherlands first ever One Day International. Should it be the Netherlands' first-ever One Day International with an apostrophe and a hyphen?
  • I'd have a paragraph break before "He made one final appearance" due to change of topic at that point.

Post-retirement

  • I think "pilots licence" should be "pilot's licence" with the apostrophe.

    @BlackJack thanks for the review. I have actioned all your suggestions. Would have been great to see Bakker in action in 1991, bowling alongside Cardigan Connor in that match. No Marshall though, but I doubt Yorkshire were complaining. On the 5CY, it is a shame Bakker wasn't one of them, as I do agree that it would have been good for Dutch cricket. Sadly today, interest amongst the Dutch is rapidly declining and the national team (when compared to the 2003 WC) is mostly expats now and its success is inflated by using players with Dutch passports from full member nations with extensive FC careers. Think gone are the days when Europe produced Bakker's, van Troost's, and Mortensen's. AA (talk) 19:40, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
    I definitely saw Ole Mortensen playing for Derbyshire. He was a fine bowler. I think the problem in the Netherlands, as in other countries, is the preponderance of football. It has become so universally popular that it's difficult to interest young players in cricket and other sports.
