¿Qué tal? Me again. Since I read about this group during my review of Jorge Meléndez's article, I think I'm a suitable reviewer. I shall get to this shortly. — ThaddeusOrlando55 (talk) 23:15, 5 February 2026 (UTC)

Images

The only images are the party flag and a photograph of Quiñónez. Both have the appropriate licensing tags. You couldn't find any images of members of the Red League? I did a quick search myself and couldn't find anything, but I also didn't look very hard.

Sources

Three books and a thesis are cited here. All are reliable, and the only one that might be questionable, the thesis, is by an accredited historian on El Salvador. All sources are accessible by me.

Prose, grammar, etc.

Lead

The lead here is pretty short, but for an article of this length it's appropriate. No concerns.

History

  • "Clashes between the Red League and Quiñónez's opponents during the 1918 municipal elections resulted in around 100 deaths and 200 injuries." Is there a link for these elections? If not, it's not important, I just thought I'd ask.
  • No link
  • "The Red League continued to attack his opponents, most notably those of Miguel Tomás Molina (one of Quiñónez's cousins)." I think that the last portion of the sentence can be separated from the middle portion with a comma.
  • Added
  • "The ensuing Christmas Day Massacre killed "dozens" and over 100." I think the word "injured" is missing from that sentence.
  • Fixed
  • "The ensuing Christmas Day Massacre killed "dozens" and over 100." Since "dozens" is in quotation marks, I think you should attribute the figure to a source, as in "killed 'dozens' according to [insert name] and injured over 100."
  • Done
  • "Quiñónez's reason for disbanding the paramilitary is unclear, but historian Patricia Alvarenga hypothesized that it was because local Red League leaders were acting outside of Quiñónez's orders." I don't know how important this is to mention, but Ching didn't seem to find Alvarenga's explanation very believable. Not mandatory to mention, since Ching doesn't provide a real alternative reasoning, but I felt like bringing it up.
    • Ching (p. 264) brings up conflicts with the military under Meléndez as possibly influencing Quiñonez's decision to create the Red League as a more loyal alternative. This might be worth including if you can briefly summarize the situation, because this wouldn't be a PizzaKing13-written El Salvador-related article without at least one coup attempt somewhere lol.
    • Added a sentence, but all the tensions described were from after the league's creation so its not relevant for its establishment
    • Ching (pp. 266-267) also describes a public demonstration in support of Quiñonez's candidacy. I would suggest including this as well.
    • Added a sentence about it

    Structure

    No issues here.

    Legacy

    • This section is short, only one sentence. Normally I would ask which "writers", but instead of being lazy I actually checked the source and Ching doesn't specify. I need to stop making my job so difficult. I should barely do any work while demanding all of the credit like every patriotic American.
      • Ching (p. 269) includes a description of the Red League by an American diplomat likening the Red League to a feudal structure. That might be worth including in this section or the previous one. It is up to you.
      • Added this quote
      • You also briefly touch on this in the previous section, but Ching at several points emphasizes the scarcity of sources on the Red League. That might be something to include here since you have discussed the organization's historiography. You mentioned the absence of names of party bosses, but rank-and-file names are also apparently nonexistent, or at least as of 1997. Ching described it as a "key pillar" of the Meléndez–Quiñónez dynasty, so you could include that if you'd like. You specifically mention the dynasty by name in the lead but not in the body, so this might be a good place to do it.
      • Added this to the legacy section and moved the bosses sentences there too

      Overall

Another well put-together article about a subject that was presumably not easy to research due to its relative obscurity. I can imagine you finding lots of sources about Marty and thinking that this whole project of yours would be easy. Then you get stuff like the Red League and the 1895 election and I'm sure that you momentarily regretted this choice lol. Once the above concerns, suggestions, and other ramblings have been addressed, I will be able to pass the article. — ThaddeusOrlando55 (talk) 11:50, 6 February 2026 (UTC)

@ThaddeusOrlando55: Thanks for the review! You've really helped point out how this article could be improved further. Ching has been a savior with regards to the topics that he blessed with inclusion in his thesis lol. PizzaKing13 (¡Hablame!) 🍕👑 17:01, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
