Wind speed?
Since wind speed is the issue here, some mention of wind speed would be informative.

I, too, agree. As a New Zealander, would be nice to learn more about the causative dynamics of the infamously ferocious and unrelenting winds recorded around Cook Strait, Foveux Strait, and the Canterbury Plains (the last, the nor-wester, being also a Foehn wind). Different meaning of term
"The Roaring Forties" was also a term referring to an upper-class neighborhood in NYC, possibly the 40th street area.
Its use in this 1920's newspaper clipping indicates that meaning would have been widely known and understood.
