TV show

sorry! I added the parts about the tv show thinking that wikipedians had not added a page (nothing came up in my search results, and I am fairly new to wikipedia [i've been here before, but just for research things]) I added the parts about the TV show (which proved how little I knew), and kind-of muddled the article thank you for straightening it out, and again, sorry....

Inappropriate additions

Someone (I'm guessing from the repetition of his previous activity that it's User:Mare-Silverus) has been inserting quotes at the top of this article and two others about Static. As I've explained to him, they do not belong there; this is an encyclopedia, not a fan site, and there are standards for how articles should be structured and what they should contain. This is why I keep removing those quotes, and will continue to remove them as often as necessary. If the person who keeps adding them would like to act like an adult and discuss it, that would be very welcome. Tverbeek 18:00, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Move and Merger

I've renamed this page from Static (comics) to Static (superhero) to reflect the fact that the character is well-established in both comics and television. In this context, the Static Shock page can focus on the television series itself, and this page can focus on the character in both media, including coverage of the comics series of the same name. The Static (Static Shock) page will be merged into this page and the main Static Shock page, and redirected here. Tverbeek 23:35, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Trivia section heading

I've changed the heading back to just "Trivia" again. Since the page is about Static, then the trivia is by default assumed to be about Static. Saying "Trivia about Static/Virgil Hawkins" is redundant. Pitr 19:20, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

RE the last item in the trivia section

"In the animated series, Virgil has harboured a powerful dislike of guns, since his mother, an emergency call doctor and ambulance paramedic, was killed by stray gang-fire during the Dakota City Riots, twelve years before the Big-Bang. His fear and hatred for guns has been illustrated more than once in the series."

It's not that I don't think that this is relevent or important, I just don't recall guns ever being a real issue in the animated series except maybe as his dislike of being shot at.

For my own reference, could somebody please drop some examples (series and espisode number + scene or quote) into the discussion section.

There is no need to edit the main article. This is just for my curiosity.

Powers

I think the ultra-detailed Powers section could be replaced with something much simpler, a sentence or two saying that Static is capable of performing many electrical-based feats. Lots42 16:32, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I relise that it may be useless to put this here, but by my computer, Statics powers claim to be "</the super ability to rifle through space bins>". Yet when I got to edit page, it says the usual of electrical manipulation. Can anyone explain this?194.81.189.20 (talk) 13:17, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Gang Banger

Is the use of the term Gang Banger throughout the begining Bio section accurate? It seems unlikely that as well as being part of a gang war, all the individuals present were group rapists. - 86.143.10.122 (talk) 10:12, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Some Cleanup

With Static now fully intergrated into the DC Universe (he's made his first official appearance in Terror Titans #3), I suppose it's time to clean up the page. Static (DC Comics) → Static (comics) —

Being the first one doesn't necessarily make him more important. (Example: Human Torch page goes to the second Human Torch.) Why should the DC character get the main Static (comics) page over the Marvel character? (Or vice versa.) It makes the most sense to leave that page as a disambig page because the average user who would be looking up information about one of the two probably doesn't know the other exists and that disambig page would make it easiest for them to get it right. And Wikipedia is meant for the users, not the editors. By the way, I was the one who moved the page. I didn't think it needed a discussion since it was such an obvious mistake to not have a disambig page. I was making a bold and helpful edit. Furthermore, it obviously was not a major mistake to make this move because it has been a month since the move before you even noticed. --Spidey104^contribs 02:29, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- My critique, is not that who was first (although this Static was), but rather who is the notable character, and the one people would be searching first for in a Static comics search. Static (DC Comics) does not work, simply because Static (Milestones) would be equally appropriate, the DC Comics undermines much of the significance of the imprint and reflects a recentism understanding of the character. There was a other uses noted for the Marvel character on the previous Static (comics) page. -Sharp962 (talk) 12:47, 11 January 2010 (UTC).

Namesake

I have twice now removed the line

Static's civilian identity was named after the first African American to go to law school, who was himself named after the Roman poets Virgil and Ovid.

because there seems to be no reliable source supporting any portion of it.

First, no source specifies that Static was named after that particular person.
Second, Virgil D. Hawkins was so very, very, VERY not the first African American to go to law school. He applied to law school in 1949, and while I have not so far found a definitive source for the first to attend any law school I do know that Mr. Hawkins was nearly a century too late. The first African American lawyer passed the Maine bar in 1844, Howard's University law school was originally all-black and opened in 1869, and the first black woman lawyer graduated from Harvard in 1872.
Third, no source clarifies just who Virgil D. Hawkins was named after the Roman poets. Perhaps he was named for his grandfather or some such common tradition. The sources I have read don't specify.

Before I removed that sentence for the first time I did search for sources, and I may have missed one (particularly with regards to primary sources establishing who Static was named for as I do not read the comics or watch the show), but as I have indicated above the sources provided so far do not support the assertions. If it helps, I have a scan of the issue (#17) that McDuffie (At least I think it was McDuffie) mentioned that he received an article that mentioned that a Virgil Hawkins, in 1949 was denied admittance to law school in Florida because of his color, despite the US Supreme Court ruling that he was allowed to attend. He eventually joined the Florida bar, but was eventually disbarred for no reason in 1985, but posthumously reinstated by Harley Herman, a white civil rights lawyer.

Yes, there was a Virgil Hawkins who was denied entry to the University of Florida law school in 1949 as you say, but the question is whether that issue (or another, or some other source entirely) actually establishes that Static is named after him. Without a concrete source it could just be a coincidence. I'll try to track down that issue and see what it says. Thanks for the pointer. VernoWhitney (talk) 15:24, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I managed to track down the issue of the comic referenced by the IP above and it states (original formatting retained):

Certainly an indication that it's possible, but not a 100% confirmation. I emailed the obit's author yesterday and unfortunately she doesn't have any notes from that long ago to determine where she learned that, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that she referenced it from here, since it's been in the article for years. So from all of that and barring any contradictory evidence, the NYTimes obit seems to be a reliable source for the Static—Virgil D. Hawkins connection.
