Talk:Subrace

I removed a {{Prod}}, which had a rationale of: "subrace" does not occur in either Race (biology) or Fantasy trope, and deletion would allow the Search function to reveal uninhibited results (45 other mentions in Enwiki). This is a classic "surmountable problem" (specifically WP:NOEFFORT).

The main entry here is for a biological taxonomic rank, and under no circumstances should WP not have coverage of some sort for this, easily findable. If Race (biology) does not presently mention it, then this is a problem to fix, not a problem to pretend doesn't exist. Fantasy trope might not be the right target for the other listed concept, but it could and should be mentioned somewhere, probably Character race, since the term probably only exists in the context of F&SF gaming (e.g. Tolkien's novels and similar works don't use the term, but various RPG manuals do). With regard to both of these usages, I probably have enough source materials on-hand to add sourced entries for them at the appropriate pages, if no one else wants to do it. But it's pretty low-priority to me. Finally, if "uninhibited" search results reveal 45 other mentions of the term, then it is pretty likely that there are one or more additional concepts that should appear on this DAB page and link to something appropriate, even if we need to add it/them somewhere.  — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼  17:59, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
