Hi! I work for a communications firm that represents Early Warning Services, the owner of clearXchange and Zelle. I have some requests for updates to this article. For clarity's sake, I'll break them out by section. I've also mocked up all the changes here, in my sandbox.
Article as a whole:
- Renaming the article from clearXchange to Zelle, as clearXchange itself has been renamed.[1][2] Links on the Early Warning and Zelle disambiguation pages will also need to be updated.
Lead:
- In the beginning of the lead, replacing
clearXchange, also known as Zelle,with simplyZelleand updating most mentions of clearXchange throughout the article to Zelle. - Updating

Like an ACH transfer, the service allows transactions initiated by the payer or the payee. You can send or request money from your contacts in your smartphone. Once initiated, a payment cannot be canceled, but can be reversed in case of fraud.[6] The service's web site says that "Your recipient will generally receive the funds within 5 business days".[6]

I might look at it more thoroughly later if I get around to it, but for now, why did you remove the bit about transactions being reversible in the case of fraud? - Thank you very much, Benjaminikuta. I really do strive to be a more honest and helpful COI editor. The answer to your question is that payments cannot be reversed; they can only be canceled if they are still incomplete (source). Fraud cases are handled with individual attention and there isn't any official policy documentation to point to as a source. I think to limit confusion, it would be best if the information regarding the company as it was organized under the name clearconnect should be limited to the history section. To be clear, clearXchange is still operating for certain types of transactions, so Zelle and clearXchange technically coexist—it's just that for most consumers, Zelle is effectively replacing the role clearXchange played for them. That might depend on what happens to clearXchange in the future. The article gives the impression that clearXchange is now just a remnant, but it still exists as a separate offering. It's not clear to me why Zelle was created as a separate service and clearXchange continues to exist. If they just wanted to do business as a new name for marketing reasons, that would presumably be easier to accomplish without disabling all clearXchange P2P accounts and launching a separate new service. —BarrelProof (talk) 12:05, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
Any real connection?
Is there any real connection between the older "clearXchange" service and the newer "Zelle" service, other than the ownership of the services and perhaps a marketing campaign? Currently the article says "Once their clearXchange accounts are deactivated, former clearXchange users may enroll with Zelle." OK. I suppose that is true. But they may also not enroll with Zelle. And people who did not have clearXchange accounts may also enroll with Zelle. And people who were enrolled with clearXchange may also just go enroll in something else that's not Zelle – e.g., they may enroll with Venmo. Maybe they were already enrolled with Venmo. Why should there be a presumption that they should enroll with Zelle instead of with something else? I know the company that owns the two services would like to encourage them to sign up for Zelle, but there's no automatic transfer of user accounts from clearXchange to Zelle, right? Those are just two different services, aren't they? It's not a renaming of the same service – the user needs to take explicit action if they want to sign up for the new, different service. One service is deactivating its users' accounts. Those people can just go away, or they can sign up (or not sign up) for any other payment transfer service they want to, just like anyone who had not signed up for clearXchange. Am I missing something? Perhaps, instead of one article that talks about both topics, there should just be two separate articles – one about clearXchange and one about Zelle. The article says Zelle was "previously known as clearXchange", but it wasn't. Zelle is a different offering, and clearXchange is something that continues to exist in some form. - I saw we create a new article for Zelle, leave the old one for clearXchange and then add a passing mention in each such as "Zelle evolved from the companies previous service called clearXchange" etc. If we take this route this page should really be moved back and a new one started for Zelle for history and attribution reasons. Missing information about how the system works
Can a payee request a payment (i.e., send a bill to a payer) within the system? Can a transfer (e.g. an accidental one) be cancelled/rescinded? (In Venmo, a payment can be canceled before it is finalized, and this feature has been used by fraudsters.) —BarrelProof (talk) 07:09, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm still pondering how best to fit the components together, but how do we feel about starting with adding back in the Service section, with some updates? This was a big component of the old clearXchange article and I think it would still be helpful here.

Hi all! As noted above, I work for a communications firm that represents Zelle. I have a tiny edit request: a couple months ago, an IP editor added SunTrust to the list of owner banks named in the article's first sentence. Per the source cited there, this is inaccurate, and SunTrust should get removed from the list. (SunTrust is a partner bank, but not an owner.) "Competition" with Paypal's [Clearly Inferior] Venmo Service
Only the first paragraph of this section makes any actual reference to competition between the two platforms. Based on the rest of the content, I'm going to propose that this section be retitled with the more accurate heading "Top Four Reasons Paypal's Venmo Service Obviously Sucks Compared to Zelle".

- Well, it does describe at least two advantages to Venmo:
- "Venmo is more popular, based on public awareness, opinion polling, and active engagement with users" and
- "Venmo payments can be canceled before they are finalized. This provides some ability to correct accidental payments and rescind transactions that have not proceeded to the satisfaction of the payer."
- The ability to cancel a payment (e.g. an accidental payment or a payment to someone who turns out to be a fraudster) is a big advantage to the sender of the money. Of course, it's also a big disadvantage to the recipient, who cannot be assured that the money they thought they received will stay in their account.

Can we include how clearXchange was originally created and the idea behind the original pitch back in 2010 in NYC before CXC was ever a thought? That was what truly gave birth to this trillion dollar annual network that Zelle has become today. Hello, I'm a representative of Early Warning Services, the parent company of Zelle. I've come to this Talk page to propose improvements to the Zelle article. I've read up on Wikipedia's content and COI guidelines and will do my best to operate within them.
For my first edit request, I've done a top-to-bottom rewrite of the History section, which has some good aspects but on the whole is a bit messy and hard to follow. My draft makes numerous changes, which you can discern by looking at the side-by-side comparison below, but my primary goals are to improve the section's sourcing, clarify its chronology, and remove claims that are outdated, irrelevant, or that don't seem to belong in a History section.

Zelle originated as clearXchange, a payments service launched in April 2011 by Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo.[1][2] The platform enabled person-to-person, business-to-consumer, and government-to-consumer payments.[3]
By 2015, clearXchange had expanded to include US Bank and Capital One as owner-members.[4][5] That same year, it announced the availability of a real-time payments system.[6][7] In 2016, clearXchange was acquired by Early Warning Services, a financial technology company.[8] At the time of the acquisition, Early Warning was owned by Bank of America, US Bank, Chase, Capital One, Wells Fargo, PNC Bank, and BB&T, which would later become Truist.[9][10] The following year, Early Warning introduced Zelle and announced the phaseout of clearXchange's person-to-person service.[11]
In March 2019, Early Warning Services CEO Paul Finch stepped down to work for his family's charitable foundation.[12] In May 2019, Early Warning Services appointed a new CEO, Albert Ko, who was formerly the chief transformation officer for Intuit.[13]
By the end of 2022, Zelle was offered by approximately 1,800 financial institutions and reached about 80% of Americans with bank accounts, processing $1.6 billion in daily transactions.[14] In August 2023, Early Warning appointed Cameron Fowler as chief executive officer, succeeding Albert Ko.[15] In September 2024, Denise Leonhard, formerly of Venmo, PayPay, and American Express, became general manager of Zelle.[16]
During 2024, Zelle processed over $1 trillion in transactions, with approximately $283 billion being sent or received by small businesses.[17][18] By the end of that year, Zelle was connecting 151 million consumer and small business bank accounts.[17][19] In April 2025, Zelle discontinued its standalone mobile app, requiring customers to access the service through participating banks' applications.[20] As of July 2025, Zelle was offered by 2,300 financial institutions, with 95 percent of those institutions being either community banks or credit unions.[21][22] References

Removing Competition with Venmo section

Hello again! I'd like to ask editors to consider removing the Competition with Venmo section from this article. Reasonable people can disagree, but I'm not sure this sort of "product comparison" content belongs in an encyclopedia article. Further, there's a lot of information in the section that's either already out of date (most claims come from 2018 and 2022) or that would be hard to keep accurate over the long-term.
I'm going to post the section in full here, so that other folks can take a look without having to toggle between this request and the article text:

- Hello and thank you for your COI request. I would appreciate it if you explained why you felt this content warrants removal in more depth. While I understand that product comparisons can be irrelevant in some cases, I believe that the mention of PayPal and Venmo contributes to the article. It appears to me that they are direct competitors and heavily influence one another and as such, their relationship is a valuable addition in this topic. Regarding your issue with the outdated figures, if you find new figures, I'd be more than happy to implement those new figure into the article. Since all the date-relevant information has the date the information was true of clearly stated, I don't see any reason to remove it for that reason alone.
- You might find Wikipedia:RVREASONS useful as it outlines some valid reasons and invalid reasons that content might be removed.

- User:Mustbeotherwise: Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have a problem with PayPal and Venmo being mentioned in this article because, as you point out, they're high-profile competitors. My main issue is the volume of content. If you visit the Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App pages, there's little-to-no content about Zelle, and certainly not a whole section about Zelle as compared against those services.
- I also find the product comparison-like parts of this section problematic because these services change in small ways all the time, and those small changes often don't get covered by the kind of publications that Wikipedia deems reliable. I don't know everything about the fine details of Venmo's service, but I would imagine there are some claims in this section that are slightly wrong or out-of-date with regard to precisely how Venmo works.
- If I could make a suggestion: I'm currently in the process of putting together some suggestions for the Service section, so that it's up-to-date and relatively evergreen. Would it be okay if I included a couple lines about Zelle's competitors, as a kind of replacement for this section? Obviously, the devil is in the details but if that sounds like a good idea, I could submit that draft in a separate request and we could go from there.

- you would likely find wp:due useful. It talks about the warranted volume of content for specific topics in articles. If you believe the articles for venmo, cashapp and PayPal under represent their competition, you can file a COI edit request to add info to those articles.
- You are more than welcome to review the sources in the product comparison-like parts of this section. If they aren't up to Wikipedia's standards for reliability and/or independence, you can request the source and it's corresponding content be omitted. However, you must be specific. Please review Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on WP:Independent sources and WP:Reliable Sources of you plan to do so.
- You are always welcome to suggest new, more up to date information in articles, as long as those details are sourced.
- I would recommend opening two separate COI edit requests if they are distinct and separate topics. Overly large COI edit requests can be daunting to the volunteers who review them.
