The project was authored by Gerónimo Cuervo.[1] It opened on 17 December 1870.[2][3] It became a municipal property in 1998,[1] subsequently becoming the main venue of the Málaga Film Festival.[4] In 2005, it received the status of Bien de Interés Cultural.[5] It also serves as venue for the Málaga Theatre Festival.[6] The Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra regularly plays at the venue.[7]
