The Africa Institute was conceived by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, whose Emirate hosted the first symposium on Africa-Arab relations in December 1976.[1] It was established in 2018.[2][3]

The Africa Institute is an inter-disciplinary research institution for academic studies on Africa divided into humanities and social sciences.[2]

As of December 2025, Sudanese writer Salah Hassan is dean of the Africa Institute. Moroccan political scientist Zaynab El Bernoussi is interim chair of Humanities, while Zambian economist Grieve Chelwa is chair of Social Science.[4]
