The Moon on a Rainy Night (Japanese: 雨夜の月, Hepburn: Amayo no Tsuki) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kuzushiro. It began serialization on Kodansha's Comic Days manga website in June 2021. It has been collected in eleven tankōbon volumes as of January 2026. An anime television series adaptation produced by CompTown has been announced.
On a rainy night, Saki Kindaichi bumps into a girl her age while on her way to piano lessons, scraping her hand, the girl silently picks up the sheet music Saki dropped, gives her a bandage and leaves without a word. The following day as Saki begins her first semester of high school she reunites with the girl, Kanon Oikawa, as a classmate and learns that she is hard of hearing. At school, Kanon distances herself from others because of her disability, however Saki continuously reaches out to gain a better understanding of Kanon and they soon become friends. As the two grow closer, Saki helps Kanon open up to others at school, while wrestling with romantic feelings she is developing toward her new friend.
Characters
- Saki Kindaichi (金田一 咲希, Kindaichi Saki)
- A first-year high school student who has been playing the piano since she was a child. Saki becomes friends with Kanon after bumping into her on the way home and later finding out they are not only classmates but that Kanon's mother is also Saki's new piano teacher. While she wants to know and understand Kanon better she tends not to share much about herself and is generally afraid of Kanon finding out she has feelings for her.
- Kanon Oikawa (及川 奏音, Oikawa Kanon)
- Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu[2]
- A first-year high school student, she sits next to Saki in class. She has sensorineural hearing loss and wears a hearing aid. Being the child of a piano instructor and a conductor she grew up loving music and playing the piano, but gave up playing when her hearing loss started in fifth grade. She is perceived as unapproachable by her classmates. Kanon also makes a cameo appearance in episode 12 of A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace, where she is revealed to be a fan of Nana Futami.
- Rinne Oikawa
- Kanon's younger sister. She is suspicious of Saki's motivations for befriending Kanon due to bad experiences her sister has suffered in the past that were exacerbated by her hearing loss.
- Tanabe
- An energetic member of the literature club. She is initially intimidated at the idea of speaking with Kanon due to how pretty she is and for fear of saying something insensitive about her hearing, but she is encouraged by Saki to reach out anyway. She enjoys reading light novels and posts her own writing online.
- Ayano
- A childhood friend of Kanon's, she ended their friendship on bad terms when pressures from her own home life caused her to resent the attention and aid Kanon received.
- Mr Miura
- The Japanese literature teacher and advisor to the literature club. He is a recent widower who is now raising his young daughter as a single parent.
