The Woodlands School is a public secondary school in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Peel District School Board. Founded in 1969, the school serves students in grades 7 through 12 at 3225 Erindale Station Road in the Erindale neighbourhood. It functions as the Peel board's Regional Enhanced Learning Centre for gifted education at the secondary level.[1]
Founding
The Woodlands School was established in 1969, initially enrolling students in grades 7 and 8. While the permanent building at Erindale Station Road was under construction, classes were held temporarily at Springfield Public School. In September 1970, students and staff moved to the new facility, and The Woodlands began operating as a combined elementary and secondary school.[2]
2015–2016 renovation
In 2015, the Peel District School Board undertook a major renovation of the school. The project converted the former library building into a new elementary classroom wing and introduced an open-concept entrance at the front of the school. An elevator and other accessibility features, including a stage lift, stair lift, and barrier-free washroom modifications, were also added.[2][3] The renovation was completed in August 2016.
Track and field project (2025–2026)
In October 2024, the Mississauga city council approved a $5.2-million partnership with the Peel District School Board to build a new sports field and running track at the school. Construction began in the summer of 2025. The project, with costs split equally between the city and the board, includes an eight-lane synthetic track certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations, an artificial turf field for soccer, football, rugby, field hockey, and lacrosse, bleachers seating 288, and LED lighting. Ward 6 Councillor Joe Horneck said the school's existing field had been in poor condition and unusable for athletics, forcing the school to rent space at nearby Huron Park. The facility was expected to open in spring 2026.[1]
Programs
The Woodlands School serves as the Peel District School Board's Regional Enhanced Learning Centre for gifted education, offering self-contained classes for students in grades 7 through 12 who have been identified as intellectually gifted through psycho-educational assessments or Individual Education Plans. The program is intended to extend the Ontario curriculum with greater depth and emphasis on critical thinking and creative exploration.[4]
The school also offers Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs in Health and Wellness and in Arts and Culture for students in grades 11 and 12, as well as cooperative education placements and English as a Second Language (ESL) support for newcomer students.[5]
