Thomas P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Thomas P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility (TPSWRF) is owned and operated by the city of Tallahassee, Florida.[1] The facility provides sewage treatment services for Tallahassee, Florida and the surrounding areas.

The TPSWRF is permitted to treat 26.5 million gallons per day (MGD) and the facility is capable of handling peak flows up to 53 MGD.[2]

Continual monitoring serves to protect the delicate microbial ecosystems in the treatment process. The microbes drive the aerobic decomposition and anaerobic digestion of the raw sewage to eventually form a safe effluent that can be dispersed back into the environment. The byproducts of this process are eventually separated into liquids and solid matter, known as effluent and biosolids, respectively. The influent, effluent, biosolids and other parts of the process are constantly monitored by the Water Quality Lab for a variety of chemical parameters to ensure the facility meets both state and federal regulations.[3]
