Thornton, Illinois

Thornton is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, and a south suburb of Chicago. The population was 2,386 at the 2020 census.[4] Thornton is home to the Thornton Quarry, one of the largest quarries in the world.

According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Thornton has a total area of 2.40 square miles (6.22 km2), of which 2.38 square miles (6.16 km2) (or 98.92%) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) (or 1.08%) is water.[6]

2020 census

As of the 2020 census, Thornton had a population of 2,386.[11] The median age was 44.1 years. 20.0% of residents were under the age of 18 and 20.1% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.5 males.[12]

The population density was 993.75 inhabitants per square mile (383.69/km2), and there were 1,061 housing units at an average density of 441.90 per square mile (170.62/km2).[13] 100.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.0% lived in rural areas.[14]

There were 1,005 households in Thornton, and 591 families resided in the village.[13] Of all households, 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living in them. 38.4% were married-couple households, 20.8% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 33.9% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 2.39.[12][13]

Of the 1,061 housing units, 5.3% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.7% and the rental vacancy rate was 4.5%.[12]

Income and poverty

The median income for a household in the village was $66,447, and the median income for a family was $85,375. Males had a median income of $41,890 versus $39,329 for females. The per capita income for the village was $32,251. About 2.7% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under age eighteen and 14.5% of those age sixty-five or over.
