The genus was established in 1980 by Hannes Hertel and Gotthard Schneider and includes about 20 species found worldwide.

The genus was circumscribed in 1980 by Hannes Hertel and Gotthard Schneider, with Trapeliopsis wallrothii designated as the type species.[2]
