Etymology and characteristics
The UK underground rap scene has been referred to by publications as "UK UG" or "UK's rap revolution".[2][1] New York magazine The Fader stated that "cross-pollination" separated the scene from previous UK rap traditions and artists such as Central Cee, Skepta, Slowthai, J Hus, Dean Blunt, and Pretty V.[3] The movement's leading artists such as Kwes E would feature in videos by others in the scene like Jim Legxacy.[3] The publication added that listening to English rapper Fakemink could lead you down to EsDeeKid's 2025 single "LV Sandals" featuring Fakemink and Rico Ace.[3]
The publication also stated that the scene is inspired by American rap music and that "those American influences run deep", with artists tending to "rely on jerk beats" and lyrics referencing American brands, culture and athletes.[3] However, artists such as EsDeeKid showcase their regional influences by rapping in a "thick" Scouse accent.[3] British magazine Dazed stated that several artists in the scene were from Generation Z and had been "robbed" of their youth due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
History
2015–2023: Origins

According to The Guardian, London rapper Lancey Foux was "fundamental" to the scene's initial growth.[5] British DJ Kenny Allstar stated, "He started in 2015, and couldn't be boxed in: not drill, or Afroswing, or trap. He was more outlandish with his approach to the music, using heavy melodic vibes with distorted beats. It created a new wave."[5]
New York magazine The Fader stated that scene was "ignited" through the popularity of the plugg sound in 2021.[3] The single "Arc'teryx" by Romford rapper YT was cited as the song that "heralded the new scene's subsumption of American rap traditions mixed in with splashes of homegrown flavor".[3] The Fader also labeled British rapper Phreshboyswag as a "key moment" in the rise of the UK underground rap scene, stating that he was more associated with the New York jerk revival than the London music scene.[6]
British magazine Dazed credited rapper Zukovstheworld as a pioneer of the "UK Ug scene", stating "Zuko was UK Ug before UK Ug".[1] The publication added that, he provided rapper Fakemink with "some of his first features back when he was known as 9090gate, hopped on Wraith9 beats long before Timothée Chalamet had ever heard of EsDeeKid, and has been fusing DIY punk and indie sensibilities with trap and rage beats as far back as 2022."[1]
2024–2026: Popularity
While rooted in the US, jerk music began to gain momentum in the UK in 2024, spearheaded by artists like Fakemink[7][8][9][10] as well as YT with his single "Black and Tan", whose music video made use of the "Frutiger Metro" aesthetic, the song was described by the Fader as a "crowning jewel" of the jerk revival,[3] the song was followed by the single "Prada or Celine".[11][12][13][14] These releases were followed by further contributions in the genre by artists such as Jim Legxacy, EsDeeKid,[15] Len and Fimiguerrero.[13][16][17]

The scene was further popularized by English rapper Fakemink, described as the "man-of-the-moment" by Dazed.[1][18] British magazine The Face stated that his 2023 album London's Saviour was titled such as he wanted to "change" the London music scene which he had previously noted as "all trash".[19][20] The Fader credited him with pioneering a microgenre dubbed "moody jerk" and labeled him a "critical darling".[3]
In 2025, the scene gained wider attention with the commercial breakthrough of EsDeeKid, whose single "Phantom" reached the UK Top 20 and whose debut album Rebel became the most streamed hip-hop album globally on Spotify that year.[5] The Guardian stated, "to the outside world his rise seemed to happen overnight".[5] While noting that the popularity of the UK UG scene signaled that "with US rap in the doldrums, the time is ripe for another British Invasion".[5] Similarly, American newspaper The Wall Street Journal noted EsDeeKid as spearheading a new "British Invasion".[21] Jim Legxacy's Black British Music (2025) charted in 47 countries and peaked at number 3 on the UK R&B Chart.[22][23][24][25][26]
In January 2026, Dazed published an article regarding rappers in the scene's Christian faith as Romford rapper YT was "ridiculed" by fans online for redacting a line from a song regarding pornographic actress Bonnie Blue on American streamer PlaqueBoyMax's Twitch livestream. YT's decision was supported by rappers such as Dave and Svn4vr.[27] The publication argued that the scene had pushed for more inclusion of rapper's religious beliefs in British youth culture music.[27]

Snoa is an English rapper from Leicester.[28] He has been labeled by The Guardian as "prolific even by the standards of underground rap", stating that at the time of the article's release he had put out 71 singles and three albums in 2025, while keeping "his quality at a remarkably high level".[28] He released the album 2il De4th Du Us 7art in 2025 with production credits by American record producer 444Jet which according to The Guardian "make it a classic of the cloud-rap genre".[28] His work was compared to Playboi Carti, Che, Bladee and OsamaSon.[28]
