The mandate of the press is to support the university's research dissemination, the press publishes peer-reviewed scholarly books, academic journals, and monographs.[1][2]
The press produces specialized academic literature concerning Borneo biodiversity, East Malaysian indigenous peoples, and tropical studies.[3][4]
The press was established as Universiti Malaysia Sabah publication unit (Malay: Unit Penerbitan UMS). Its formation was authorized by Section 6(1)(h) of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Constitution 1998.[5] The press published the first journal in 1998 which was the inaugural issue of MANU, an academic journal focusing on the humanities and social sciences.[6]
The press collaborated with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) to publish scholarly works on the socio-economic development of border towns between Sabah and Kalimantan.[7]
