After playing Pokémon competitively for multiple years using IRC and Azure Heights channels, Smogon was setup by Chris "chaos" Monsanto on December 17, 2004. Smogon has a unique tiering system which splits individual species of Pokémon based on how frequently they are used.[1] The tiers are split into NU (NeverUsed), which includes Pokémon that see minimal usage competitively including fully evolved Pokémon. UU (UnderUsed), including stronger Pokémon that can be used in OU, but usually not more than five percent of the time. OU (OverUsed), including serious competitive species that are banned from Ubers.[1] Ubers, which is considered the most inclusive tiers, allowing all species of Pokémon, including most legendaries.[2]
