Andrew Z. Colvin

Andrew Z. Colvin

An alumnus of Arizona State University, I studied a host of topics, primarily focused on biology, secondary education, and history. My expertise is in ecology and evolution (particularly enthusiastic about speciation) and behavioral ecology. My major interests in history relate to the history and philosophy of science and the relationship between science, culture, and society. I also enjoy paleontology and research concerning the evolutionary history of life on Earth. As an educator, I fully believe in the application of the Socratic method to stimulate thinking and generate authentic learning. When I have the time on Wikipedia, I try to improve and expand articles that lack depth as well as create articles on missing topics. I do my best to provide well-sourced content for readers, teachers, and students. I strive to create scientific diagrams to convey complex scientific concepts in an understandable way. Anything else you need or want to know you can ask me on my talk page.

Articles Needing Work

Needing/Possibly needing creation

  • Speciation in the fossil record - PRIORITY; will need linking with existing speciation-related articles; see books
  • Introduction to speciation - possibly needed once the main article gets rewritten; will basically be the current version simplified and shortened
  • Evidence of sympatric speciation - PRIORITY; will need its own article because the literature is HUGE. Similar to reinforcement but more controversial
  • Asynchrony of Seasons Hypothesis - related to allochronic speciation
  • Evidence of allopatric speciation - possibly needed; section in main article is large and not comprehensive; the goal would be to summarize that section and create as comprehensive, individual article
  • List of allopatrically distributed species - massive list and a huge undertaking; not likely to be possible
  • Recombinational speciation - likely in hybrid speciation
  • Chromosomal speciation - maybe; stasipatric speciation should be included (it is also discussed in parapatric speciation article)
  • Genic speciation - not sure
  • Evolution in Daphne finches - very large literature on the topic; most by Grant & Grant
  • Speciation in birds - a wealth of literature; consider its own article (A whole book has been written on the matter; the history of speciation research focuses heavily on birds)
  • Speciation in fish - not priority at the moment
  • Speciation in insects and/or Ecological speciation in phytophagous insects - not priority at the moment
  • Speciation in plants - Much needed as the literature is huge; not priority at the moment
  • Species concepts - blue link because it is covered in species; there is enough information to create an article of its own; currently a redirect
  • History of species concepts - possibly needed after full independent article on species concepts is written
  • Biological species concept - worthy of its own article as it is the most widely discussed concept; currently a redirect
  • Vicariance biogeography - maybe needs creation or incorporation into biogeography parent article
  • Speciation on islands - maybe needed to compile the vast lit on phylogeography, colonization, radiations, etc.
  • Colonization and speciation on oceanic islands - a survey of colonization and speciation on oceanic islands such as Hawaii, Macronesia, and the Galapagos
  • Cryptic speciation
  • Speciation coupling or Coupling in speciation - See Butlin & Smadja (2018) (Genetic linkage)
  • Mutation-order speciation

Diagrams needing creation

  • Galapagos colonization and speciation of fauna: finches, lizards, tortoises, hawk, and mockingbird.
  • Radiation diagrams of species on other islands (peripatric speciation article); see Whittaker et al. (2008) for overview of sources.
  • combination diagram of sequential speciation and colonization of Hawaiian endemics
  • Cynomys mexicanus geographic distribution map
  • Remake and SVG this dynamo diagram
  • Marine transgression and regression

Templates needing work\creation

  • Template:Speciation - needs to be filled with the "article tree"; better organization
  • Template:SpeciationSidebar - possible creation, modeled after the evolutionary biology template; if created, it needs inclusion on tons of speciation articles

I just reviewed the article you started on the History of speciation. I'm incredibly impressed with how thorough and well-cited the article is. And yet you claim to have "rushed to get this article out as soon as possible".

Well done - in this and your other work. Wikipedia is fortunate to have an editor like you. paul2520 (talk) 02:51, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
