Gegenöffentlichkeit beschreibt eine Form gesellschaftlicher Aktivität, die sich bewusst in den Gegensatz zur „herrschenden“ Öffentlichkeit stellt, um vernachlässigte oder unterdrückt erscheinende Themen, Probleme oder soziale Gruppen der allgemeinen Wahrnehmung zugänglich zu machen. So wie Öffentlichkeit steht auch Gegenöffentlichkeit im Gegensatz zu privat – im Grundsatz geht es um die Besetzung öffentlicher Räume, in denen sich Menschen versammeln und einander und andere informieren können. Die Entwicklung der Kommunikationsmittel beeinflusste die Formen und Möglichkeiten von Informationsvermittlung entscheidend.

Die Demonstration ist das älteste und unvermindert aktuelle öffentliche Mittel von Menschen, um auf sich, ihre Lage oder ihre Anliegen aufmerksam zu machen. Hier wird kein (technisches) Medium zur Vermittlung benötigt – es können auch Rufe, Sprechchöre oder Plakate sein – und die Botschaften werden kurz auf den Begriff gebracht. Der anwaltschaftliche Journalismus versucht ebenfalls auf in den Massenmedien unterrepräsentierte Themen aufmerksam zu machen.

Counter public is a form of social activity whereby people make conscious attempts against the prevailing opinion in the public sphere. The main aim of counter public is to draw society's attention to topics, problems or social groups that have been neglected or suppressed by the prevailing public opinion. Like the public sphere, counter public is also opposed to private?. Generally, it is about occupying public spaces where people gather to inform themselves and others. The development of means of communication has significantly impacted the form and possibilities of how information is transmitted.
Demonstration is one of the oldest and undiminished current public means that people put into practice to draw society's attention towards their situation or concern. Protestors are not dependent on technical media to convey their message; calls, choruses, or placards are sufficient, and besides, their message is expressed in a determined and precise manner. Advocacy journalism also attempts to bring society's awareness to underrepresented topics in mass media.
Communication theory
Kommunikationsmittel werden in der Kommunikationstheorie häufig unterschieden

Means of communication are often differentiated/distinguished in models of communication

- in terms of the components of speech in verbal and nonverbal communication.
Media as a means of communication in the future will be distinguished :

- in primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary media, depending on the technology used by sender and recipient.
Mass media
Mass media refers to reaching many recipients from one - or less than one - sender simultaneously or nearly simultaneously.
- transmission of information via printing products in diverse forms (Book, flyer (pamphlet), Xerography, Poster, unadressed mailing, Mail merge, newspaper);
- transmission of language, music or other sounds radio waven (Radio broadcasting);
- transmission of visual image and sound via radio wave (Television);
- the most up-to-date means of communication in a long chain of innovation is the Internet.
