Jimi Sellars
Jimi Sellars is an American singer‑songwriter, audio engineer, and endurance athlete whose work blends Americana, folk, and country influences with autobiographical storytelling. He began his career in the music industry as a roadie before performing with several regional bands and later establishing himself as a solo artist. Sellars is also known for his connection to the Wisconsin endurance‑sports community and for his public role in the aftermath of the 2008 cycling collision that killed his wife, athlete Nancy Virgili Sellars. Early Life and Background
Sellars grew up in a musically active household in Wisconsin, where records played throughout the day and shaped his early exposure to a wide range of genres. At age twelve, his father took him to see Count Basie perform live, an experience that sparked his interest in music and performance. His musical influences include Jackson Browne, Deep Purple, Edgar Winter, and a broad mix of artists from the rock, folk, and Americana traditions.
Career Beginnings
Sellars entered the music world as a roadie for Hurricane Express, a regional band led by Jerry Unger. His time on the road inspired him to learn guitar, and he eventually began performing with the group. Hurricane Express later achieved a notable milestone when one of their songs was featured in the television series Stranger Things.
Sellars continued working with Unger in the band Café, which performed under various names as its lineup evolved. He also collaborated with vocalist Tamera Pierce before joining the group Rimbender, where he further developed his songwriting and stage presence. Solo Career
Sellars began performing solo shows in Milwaukee and Chicago, becoming a regular at venues such as The Daily Bird and Uncommon Ground. His solo work emphasizes personal storytelling, and he has noted that only two of his songs are fictional; the rest are drawn from real events and experiences. Recording and Production
Sellars began recording music at age twelve using a cassette recorder, later progressing to a four‑track machine, 2‑inch analog tape, and eventually digital production. He developed his engineering skills under Vinny Milivolte at Axis Recording, and later worked at The Exchange in Milwaukee and Studio Z with Brad Zelwig.
His album It’s About Time was recorded over a ten‑year period across multiple studios. Sellars wrote all the music and lyrics and also engineered and produced the album. The songs reflect significant events and transitions in his life during the decade‑long recording process.
Sellars also engineered and produced the Local Folk Project, which included the track “Benjamin’s Song,” performed by Stephanie Dosen of the Bella Union label. Artistic Style and Themes
Sellars’ songwriting is autobiographical, drawing heavily from lived experience. His work often explores themes of resilience, loss, humor, personal transformation, and the emotional landscape of life on the road. He has described his life as “a book,” with each song representing a chapter. Personal Life
Sellars was married to Nancy Virgili Sellars, an accomplished endurance athlete who completed multiple American Birkebeiners, ultra‑marathons, Ironman triathlons, and the Race Across America. The couple were active in Wisconsin’s running and cycling communities. 2008 Cycling Collision and Public Coverage
On July 10, 2008, Nancy Sellars was killed in a hit‑and‑run collision while cycling in Racine County, Wisconsin. The incident and subsequent legal proceedings received extensive coverage in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where Jimi Sellars was quoted throughout the investigation and trial process. Reporting detailed the circumstances of the crash, the charges filed against the driver, and Sellars’ experience navigating the lengthy legal process. Memorial Events
In 2009, the inaugural Bear Trax 20K race was held in Nancy Sellars’ honor at Lapham Peak Recreation Area. Despite heavy rain and challenging conditions, nearly 400 runners participated to support the memorial fund established in her name. Sellars spoke publicly at the event, which was covered by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Athletic Achievements
Sellars is an endurance athlete who has completed 25 marathons and five Ironman triathlons. Discography Albums
