Primarily seen as a stepping-stone between the Wales under-21 and full international teams, B team matches were also used to give a run-out for fringe players and players who declared their eligibility for Wales after age-grade football. The team also allowed Welsh management to expose Cymru Premier to international football such as Gary Lloyd, Eifion Williams and Marc Lloyd-Williams.
