Hello, and happy New Year. I wanted to float an idea that I've had kicking around my head for some while about automatically checking for probably unreferenced articles. The idea being that we continuously add to the backlog rather than do it aperiodically in big chunks having scanned all of mainspace. It goes something like:

• collate a list of all pages in mainspace that were changed yesterday (or the day before yesterday)
• run the "Is this missing references?" script across them, and add any for which the answer is yes to your set of "probably unreferenced article" pages.
• I imagine this to be done whenever your true-up script runs, i.e. every day just after midnight.
• It helps in situations where editors go on a "remove unreliable source X" spree without adding {{Unreferenced}} to articles that then have no references. E.g. the footballdatabase.eu one that happened in the middle of the last backlog drive.

So I think that this Quarry query should give all articles whose last human (i.e. non-bot) edit was the day before yesterday. I chose the day before yesterday just to exclude articles that might be attracting a lot of edits. It takes about 70s to run, and returns about 47500 articles. It would be instructive to do a couple of manual runs, just to see in practice how many probably unreferenced articles are turned up. @SunloungerFrog: Would you prefer it be run before or after the true-up script? Also, PyWikiBot does not appear to have support for Quarry, so the SQL query would need to be run a different way. I suppose after the true-up script, to avoid working through problem pages twice? But it probably doesn't really matter. On the SQL front, can you just take the SQL from the Quarry query and then use this, i.e. the -mysqlquery parameter? Or I see that a PagePile can be used as an input, and PagePile can take a Quarry query ID as input. Or Superset looks good too, though I have never used it. @SunloungerFrog: -mysqlquery would require me connect to the database, which I have never done before (though if you'd like to help out, for this or in general, I can give you access to the Toolforge project where the code is hosted). Superset would probably be the simplest way for me, as it already has a dedicated pagegenerator, and wouldn't need to be passed to another service, like Quarry/PagePile. @SunloungerFrog: Up and running at User:ARandomName123/unref8. The previously listed pages there were moved to unref7. Since it has been a while since I scanned through all articles, most, if not all, of the articles on the list are there because they were previously unsourced, and then edited, not because they were newly unsourced.

I added it to the same program that does the true-up run (22:00), so it should run immediately after it (~23:00). It took an hour and twenty minutes, which is longer than I expected but probably due to the 50k articles it needed to scan through. I also ended up removing page_id and rev_timestamp from SELECT in the query, as only namespace and title are valid outputs. ARandomName123 (talk)^{Ping me!} 04:10, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

That looks great. It is heartening to see that the percentage of probably unreffed articles in that batch (36/48437 = 0.074%) is an order of magnitude less than the percentage of unreffed + probably unreffed articles in the whole encyclopedia (69182/7124018 = 0.971%) so we're not going to be adding loads of new articles to the probably unreffed backlog each time, and the total number (< 70,000) is probably not too far off the mark. And I think if we keep trickling it in like this, we will keep on top of it all. Will this run each night now? Thanks for doing all the hard work with the script / bot! @SunloungerFrog: Yes, it will run every night. Not sure if you noticed but some stats were in the edit summary, most notably the 150 articles detected. Once duplicates were removed, that dropped to 36 which means ~75% of articles fulfilling the currently likely unreferenced criteria are already listed. This is a pretty smart way of keeping up to date on these articles (I'd planned to at one point do monthly/weekly runs through all 7m articles), so kudos to you for coming up with it! I hadn't seen the edit summaries, but they are great. Well, well done us for getting this up and running - I think it will keep the project on a good track. Under the contract, all copyright and exploitation rights were assigned to Marco Canova and Tom Dyer. As a result, the ghostwriter does not hold any ownership, co-authorship, or publication rights to the book. The involvement was contractual and does not confer authorship, licensing, or commercial rights to the book’s content or distribution.

The book has now been published, and Marco Canova and Tom Dyer are the sole authors and rights holders. The contract governing these rights was signed by all parties and is legally binding.

@Buffythevampslyr: I'm assuming you're referring to the third criteria at the notability criteria for authors? You could try asking the reviewer on their talk page, but I will note that meeting any of those criteria does not guarantee an article is necessary. In my experience, editors would like to see more than a single notable book, or additional coverage of the author herself. Hi, I understand well that notability is an absolute requirement but have really got a bit stumped by how to provide evidence of this.

I do notice that in Wikipedia's own History of Soccer in the United States there are 11 references to the book Soccer in a Football World https://archive.org/details/soccerinfootball0000wang dealing with the history of US soccer from 1685 to the early 1900s, indicating that this early history of the game is heavily reliant on the subject's book as its foundation. Does not that indicate some notability for the author?

There exist a number of very complementary book reviews, such as this next link, but I'm not sure how to incorporate this and whether it would be regarded as independent and reliable The best book on American soccer (It is an Amazon review but is by Roger Allaway, a historian also much referenced in Wikipedia's own History of Soccer in the United States).

@Disdoris: If the book itself has been reviewed multiple times, then you can create an article on the book. Please note Amazon reviews are not considered reliable sources. One in a journal or a newspaper would be preferred. As for Wangerin, the notability guideline says that he must have created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the primary subject of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews, so it is possible he may be notable under that criteria. However, in my experience reviewers would like to see more than one notable book. You may submit the article by adding {{subst:submit}} if you'd like a second opinion. @Disdoris: Sorry about the confusion on that first sentence, you can safely ignore it.

As for your adrticle, it doesn't look like you've added {{subst:submit}} to User:Disdoris/sandbox. If by bracketed term, you're referring to subst:submit, then it's a template that should add a big yellow box to the top of your submission. If you're talking about <nowiki, then it's used to type the syntax for the yellow box template, without actually having the template generated. The time limit for drafts is six months after the last edit.

@Disdoris: The most common two results from the submission process are that it gets accepted or declined. If it gets accepted, it gets moved to mainspace (where the article are). If it gets declined, you will receive a message with reviewer feedback. You are welcome to improve it, and resubmit it again. In my experience, unless your submission is a copyright violation, attacking someone, or a hoax, it is very unlikely it will be refused to the point it is deleted. @Mkfih3r: Hi! For 1), there should be a button that says "Cite" at the top of the page when you are in editing mode. Add a citation after a new sentence, or as needed. Please take a look at Help:Referencing for beginners for further information.

As for 2, the guideline is that you should not directly edit articles relating to yourself, family, friends, clients, employers or other relationships. Instead, you need to create an edit request, where you can propose changes with reliable sources, and a different editor will review them and decide whether to implement them or not. Using Wikipedia for self-promotion is prohibited.

To get started editing, try the example tasks at Special:Homepage, which can be sorted by topic. Alternatively, you can check out WikiProjects related to your interests, for example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing. @Aviator Jr: Anchors are used to direct to a specific part of a page. For example, the link Help:Link#Anchors uses the anchor #Anchors to direct you to the part of the page under the heading Anchors. They are automatically generated using headings/subheadings, and can be manually added using the {{anchor}}. Since renaming a heading will rename the automatically generated anchor, links pointing to the old anchor will no longer work. The anchor template can be used to readd the old anchor invisibly. It may be just me, but it seems like your URA review tool do not show all users when left blank? I remember that's how it worked in NOV25 but when I do that this time it just says "There are no results for User: because they have no articles to review or all have already been reviewed. Hello, I was researching Phoebus Levene (biochemist that did a lot of work on early characterization of nucleic acids) and saw that an image on his page has a structure for tetranucleotides that is credited to Levene but he never proposed the structure, certainly not in the timeframe suggested. It is a small difference in that he proposed a similar structure but linear rather than cyclical as represented on his page.
