Web services
The definition of a web service by the W3C is clear and it does not refer to the World-Wide Web nor to the Internet. It is simply a form of machine-to-machine communication. You generally do *not* use a web browser to access a web service.
There are standards defining SOAP web services over TCP and also over HTTP, which is less efficient.
