The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

• April 29 – May 5: Call for candidates
• May 8–12: Discussion phase
• May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

• The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
• Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for admin elections candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
• The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
• The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
• Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. Later, a user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

I guess because I've always had this "self-reliance" mindset. Having a nominator, to me, would feel like saying I wouldn't be able to pass without them. I like to think that my work alone is enough to get me past the finish line. I'm also cautious when communicating on the internet, and I would probably struggle to ask someone who is "bigger" than me to take time out of their day/week to look through my edits and perhaps go through discussion. I like to do things on my own in general, because it allows to do things the way I want.

Now, if someone offered to nominate me, I would gladly accept. Why turn down a free advantage and make it harder for myself? The struggle for me would be seeking a nominator, not the other way around.

This, of course, may change. I am not qualified for the tools now, I only have 6,000 edits, I've only been editing for 2 and half years, and my activity has decreased significantly overtime. I'm also still young, and have not graduated high school yet (only 3 weeks!). In a few years, I will have matured, maybe I will have made myself more qualified for adminship, and maybe I would choose to seek and run with a nominator and see that one previous statement I made years ago as silly.

So, lots to unpack, there. :D

1. You've been working on the election pages, so I know you must have seen the references to Wikipedia:Request an RfA nomination or Wikipedia:List of admin election nominators. These are people who are literally ASKING people to ask them to take the time to look through edits and discuss. You're correct that 6K edits is too little to be a serious candidate, and activity declining over time also is a problem, but when your activity increases again and you're approaching 10K, reaching out to someone on one of those lists is worth doing.
2. I assume you're being slightly facetious and know that no one is "bigger". They're just more experienced or have gone through various processes to get more tools.
3. That self-reliance mindset, IMO, falls under "hubris". :) If you're offered a chance to be mentored through an unfamiliar process by someone who is experienced and clearly well-intentioned, take it.
4. Yay on graduating, and #3 applies wherever you're going. If a (again, experienced and clearly well-intentioned) boss or professor seems to take an interest in you, open yourself to that.

Thanks for the advice! I can see how hubris and self-reliance can overlap, luckily I don't think I'm THAT bad, I do realize that sometimes other people help is required. If I'm being honest though, I don't think I would ever really demonstrate the need for the tools anyway, other than blocking vandals myself instead of waiting for someone to respond at AIV. We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Discussion phase.

On 13 May, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for.

The voting phase of the May 2026 administrator elections has started and will continue until 19 May 2026 at 23:59 UTC. You can participate in the voting phase at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Voting phase.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

• May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase (we are here)
• Scrutineering phase

In the voting phase, the candidate subpages close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies to vote has a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's vote total during the election. The suffrage requirements are similar to those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for a few days, perhaps longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (this is a good page to watchlist), and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a non-recall candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and a minimum of 20 support votes. Recall candidates must achieve 55.0% support. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
