Summarize Timeline Fact Check

I am still confused why you removed Aon's damage estimates. It is used in a wide variety of tropical cyclones in every basin for their damage tolls. WP:RSPAON claims that it provides the total economic losses, which is overall what we include in the article's damage figure. Additionally, the policy states that it provides data not found in other sources. Could you explain to me more in depth about why you think Aon should not be used and show me a reliable source backing up the claim that "it isn't official statistic by the relevant countries?" Jpuxfrd You should read the following line in WP:RSPAON "care should be taken when using the source as it may be providing a different estimate than other sources". In principle, official reports from countries should still be given priority. AON is just an insurance group, estimating insurance losses, not real economic losses.HUYTK21 (talk) 09:39, 20 October 2025 (UTC)

I see your point about prioritizing official reports over AON. That is fair using official reports from countries for storms in WPAC that already have their damage estimates released (Wutip, Co-May, etc.). However, I still do feel like the total from AON should be included in Peipah. As stated in the discussion about AON here by Hurricane Noah, "It's also helpful for countries in which it's hard to find sources for damage totals." and by 78.26 about AON being "reliable for separate information." Also, in the Q3 report and the discussion linked above, AON calculates both total economic and insured losses, both of which are usually included in the damage toll. My proposal is for now, to include AON's damage total for Peipah until we get an official report from Japan. Jpuxfrd (talk) 16:34, 20 October 2025 (UTC)

Also I would like to point out that in the discussion itself, there appears to be a general consensus that official reports should be prioritized over Aon. That is a fair point. However, in this case, we are currently under the condition that a reliable source from Japan has not released an official report. We do not know if or when Japan will release a report or a reliable source from Japan will release an estimate. The general consensus in the discussion is if we are under the condition that an a country has not released an official report (which is where we are now in the case of Peipah), Aon should be used. Also the line, "care should be taken when using the source as it may be providing a different estimate than other sources", only seems to apply if another conflicting estimate (an official report from a country) has already been released. As I mentioned above and from the discussion by Elijahandskip, "should be used in articles when NOAA has not provided a damage total." (or in this case an official report from Japan). As of late, Japan has not provided an official report for Peipah. No other conflicting sources from Japan have been released, and concluding from this, I still believe it should be included for Peipah for now. Jpuxfrd (talk) 16:54, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
