To clarify, I'm not taking a position re: hyphenation. I reverted your edits because you had not supplied a reliable source; and you were effectively renaming the article out of process.

Whether handwritten letters would be sufficient (Wikipedia tends to favour the preponderance of scholarship vs. primary sources) is unclear. But if you'd like to see the hyphens removed, you should start by making a case for renaming the article itself via Wikipedia:Requested moves.
