New pages patrol January–February 2026 Backlog drive

January–February 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol

New Pages Patrol is hosting a one-time, two-month experimental backlog drive aimed at reducing the backlog. This will be a combo drive: both articles and redirects will earn points.

  • The drive will run from 1 January to 28 February 2026.
  • The drive is divided into two phases. Participants may take part in either phase or across both phases, depending on availability.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled during the drive.
  • Two-month drive-exclusive barnstars will be awarded to eligible participants.
  • Each article review earns 1 point, while each redirect review earns 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be granted based on consistently meeting weekly point thresholds.
  • Barnstars will also be awarded for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Interested in participating? Sign up here.

Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026

Hello! I noticed you're a bot operator, so I thought you might be interested in a hackathon we're organizing: the Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026, on 13–14 March in Arnhem, Netherlands.

It's a two-day, technically oriented hackathon bringing together Wikimedians from the region. Whether you want to work on bot frameworks, tools, or other technical projects, this could be a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow developers. Registration closes mid-January or when full. Let me know if there are any questions. Hope to see you there! Daanvr (talk) 09:24, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

@Daanvr - Thanks for the heads up! Unfortunately, I've got pre-existing commitments on those dates this time around, but sounds like the sort of thing I would be interested in next time! Mdann52 (talk) 20:04, 15 January 2026 (UTC)

RetractionBot: Marking retracted sources failure

RetractionBot's task "Marking retracted sources" failed to run per the configuration specified at Wikipedia:Bot activity monitor/Configurations. Detected only 0 edits in the last 14 days, whereas at least 1 was expected. If/when the issue is fixed, please change the section title (e.g. append " - Fixed") or remove this section completely. When that is done, this notice will be reposted if the bot task is still broken or is re-broken. If your bot is behaving as expected, then you may want to modify the task configuration instead. Or to unsubscribe from bot failure notifications, remove the |notify= parameter from the {{/task}} template. Thanks! – SDZeroBot (talk) 20:20, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Filename tools

A few years back, either you created a filename tool for me on toolforge, or user:Coren did and you subsequently took over for him as maintainer.

Would it be possible to create an equivalent tool for Commons? A dynamically-updating list of all files (excluding redirects) whose names are ten characters or less (not including extensions)? If the yield would be too large, we could talk about additional parameters to narrow it down somewhat, but there's no point in doing that if the overall task isn't possible. @DragonflySixtyseven that's a blast from the past! Let me take a look tomorrow and see if I can knock something together. Mdann52 (talk) 17:45, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
Give Short Names a go - I've updated the home page to point towards enwiki or commons. It's a bit slow, but I'll put a result cap on there to speed it up a bit! Mdann52 (talk) 19:15, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Maybe if we do 6 characters or less, and a separate page for 7 to 10? DS (talk) 02:38, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
