Hello!, I am from Milwaukee as well and I saw that you're an archivist, I'm going to college next year with the long term plan of being an archivist. I was wondering what you think of the profession, or if there's something I should know before devoting myself to it. Thank you in advance! Oofgl (talk) 13:47, 29 May 2026 (UTC)

@Oofgl: The short answer is that I absolutely love the archives profession and really, really enjoy working in this field (which is very fulfilling for me, too). However, landing a job is difficult, especially when you are looking for your first full-time archives job. If you'd like to discuss further, please e-mail me (click the "Email this user" button that should appear under "Tools" on the right side of my user talk page). Happy editing! @Michael Barera: Sorry, but I can't seem to find the "email user button" under tools, I found the tools sidebar though(I'm using monobook so it was on the left, I went to the default appearance to make sure it was there and also couldn't find it) thanks! Oofgl (talk) 16:40, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
@Oofgl: No worries! I'd encourage you to volunteer in an archives to get a sense for what the day-to-day work is like, maybe even before you go to college, and definitely to pursue archival internships during your studies. We have volunteers and interns all the time at the Milwaukee County Historical Society, where I work. I always focus on teaching our interns three core tools/domains of archivy: reference, processing (arrangement and description), and digitization. Almost every archives does all three of those things, so teaching these skills and watching our interns build competency in each is one of the best things we can do for archivists in the making. I'd encourage you to pursue these volunteer/internship experiences and develop these kind of skills during (and maybe even before) you begin studying archives in the classroom.
