Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue on the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.

I'm sorry you are discouraged

Hello StalkingMouser (I love that name!)

I don't know if you will ever read this, but I read your Teahouse post, and just wanted you to know that I'm sorry you are feeling so discouraged and distressed.

Before I started an account on Wikipedia I'd done some freelance writing, had a few articles published, so I had some experience in editing my own work. Despite my writing experience there were times when I felt overwhelmed with my initial Wikipedia edits, for there were so many rules to learn and follow. I made some mistakes, and thought I'd done something dreadful. But I continued on, and now I get satisfaction from my volunteer work.

I don't know what would be best for you. but I would suggest that you step away for a time and work on other types of projects. Later on, if you feel you'd like to "dip your toes" back into Wikipedia work, you could do a few edits. Read Wikipedia articles that interest you, and if there's a sentence that seems rather awkward change it around a little so that it reads better. If an article has a tag saying more citations are needed you could hunt up a couple of good reliable references to improve the article.

But, if you decide you want to stay retired, that's fine too. Don't do anything that upsets you. Best wishes on any volunteer work you choose to work at. Karenthewriter (talk) 04:37, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
